VIOLET
The Greater Lewisville Community Theatre’s summer musical is Violet, opening July 8 and running through July 31st with performances Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. Written by Brian Crawley with music by Jeanine Tesori and based on the short story “The Ugliest Pilgrim” by Doris Betts, Violet is directed at GLCT by Liz J. Millea. Violet is a wonderful musical! It is the story of a woman on a bus trip in search of a minister to heal her scarred face and how, between North Carolina and Oklahoma, she discovers the true meaning of beauty, courage, and love. Set in 1964, while on her long bus ride, Violet meets two soldiers on their way to Viet Nam. Her relationships with them are key to her emotional awakening. The music encompasses country, gospel, blues, and honky-tonk rock. Violet opened off-Broadway in 1997 and won the Drama Critics’ Circle Award and Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical. When it opened to rave reviews on Broadway in 2014, it was a Tony nominee for Best Musical. GLCT is located at 160 W. Main St. in Old Town Lewisville. The entrance and parking are in the rear off of Elm Street. Tickets for Violet are $22 for adults and $18 for 65 & over or 18 & under. Call for reservations (recommended) at (972) 221-SHOW (7469).
